Ico Press Kit, Super Mario Bros Chest, Stress Ball, and How to Play Video Games

In the near future, Team Ico headed by the brilliant Fumito Ueda will be releasing HD 3D remakes of both Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. This release will be the lead-in to the highly anticipated potential masterpiece; The Last Guardian. It’s funny to think of how famous this development team has become with the release of two games. I’m sure we can all expect great things for the future, but let’s take a look at the past. The following item was never made available to the public and pre-dates the release of Ico which started this amazing series.

Ico Press Kit Cage

What you see here is the metal cage that was included with the Ico press kit that went out to those in the video game press. This item is probably the rarest collectible from Team Ico. It’s charm is the humble beauty of it… to think of how successful the team would become! The press kit also included the typical folder with details on the game’s design and concept art.

Ico Press Kit open

Please note that this is not the more commonly known PAL press kit which has a taller candle and a brick pattern cardboard box. Bids are already being made and now over $200 is still under the reserve price set by the seller. If you love these games, I know you instantly want this…

Ico Press Kit

The press kit is really awesome, but here are a few other more common items that may be of interest.

Super Mario Bros. Chest – This classic chest would have been great back in the 80’s to hold your NES accessories and games. The outside of the box doesn’t have any major damage, but there is a great deal of wear and tear. The chest’s interior is bare plywood which is pretty rough, but if you’re not concerned with keeping it %100 original, you can put in some other material to make it better for use.

EverQuest Shadows of Luclin Stress Ball– I remember when this item was first announced. I was very much into EverQuest at that time and spend dozens of hours a week playing. What shocked me about the stress ball was that they were flat-out telling the players, “Ya, we know the game can be crazy stressful and we think that’s great!”. lol… well, looking back, I think it was better playing in a tough world like EQ used to be. Current games like World of Warcraft make things a little too easy.

Sony Online Entertainment Cap – This is a general Sony Online promo. The seller seems to have a few of them because they have already sold two.

How to Play Video Games– This vintage guide gives tips on how to play classic arcade titles such as Donkey Kong, Missile Command, Centipede, and more…

  1. Wow, “How to play videogames”? That just goes to show, how new and extremely complicated people thought games were back in the day 🙂

P.S. sorry I’ve been gone so long!!

  2. Hmm, after doing a bit of research, I can’t find anything about the Ico press kit with the cage besides people reposting information about that auction up there. There was another Ico press kit that seems more common and I’ve seen videos of it too. Here’s that one: http://www.wecollectgames.com/press-kit/ico-press-kit.videogame.collectors.edition.limited

Is it normal to make 2 different press kits for the same game? Just trying to verify if the one with the metal cage is real.

  3. No, it isn’t normal to have 2 press kits. It’s rare that a press kit is even released for some games :/

I do believe that this one is official, I remember seeing it years ago on the net somewhere.

  4. It’s definitely uncommon to have two different press kits for the same game. Maybe it has something to do with geographical distribution? Like the more common press kit was released in the US while the other released overseas? Hard to say…
