Nintendo M9 Store Display Variant and $0.99 Nintendo Promos

We’ve got quite a puzzle here today. VGA reader Thessalya sent us a very interesting auction and I have spent quite a bit of time trying to find more information on the item. It’s a Nintendo store display similar to the display known as the M9. For those who don’t know, there’s a huge series of Nintendo displays which all have a number that begins with M. The M8 and M82 are likely the most popular because they were working machines that let shoppers try out the games but, there are many many more.

First take a look at the standard M9 display…

Nintendo M9
Now try to spot all of the differences on the display that’s up for auction…

Nintendo M9 Yellow
The most obvious difference is the base of course, but look closer. The backboard on the yellow variant is completely different. Everything is rearranged to fit the shorter case. There’s nothing on the display that shows it to be in the M9 series (such as M92 or M9B markings) but instead has the serial R-78913 on the back. Using all of this, I tried to find the story on it and all I could find was a small blurb on NintendoAge in a list of the M series displays: M Series Data Collection. If you scroll down to M9, there’s a quick note that says, “M9 displays in field to be “reworked” in Jan 1988–ROB (robot) will be removed. Has serial number.”. It says ROB is supposed to be removed on the reworked versions but the one in the auction includes ROB. Maybe the redesigned case wasn’t meant for ROB but someone put him in there anyway? I’m not sure. Also, please note I’m calling it a “yellow” variant just because of the yellow color on the display up for auction. It’s very likely that it turned yellow with age and was originally white.

Bids on this rare display are stacking up and there are still 6 days left. It’s hard to pin a value on this with so many questions around it but I’m thinking four digits… maybe. *Update: bids now $1000+*

Nintendo M9 Store Display Variant

Here are a few more auctions for today. They are all from seller Manticorps who checks in with us at VGA from time to time with their auctions. The great thing about these auctions are that they all start at $0.99. This means you will either get a good deal or you will pay your max and no higher if you’re going up against someone in a bid war.

You can find the rest of Manticorps auctions here. There’s quite a few to look through.
