“This shirt set was presented to me by an Atari official as part of the 1983 Atari World Video Game Championship (AWVGC) in Munich, Germany.
This championship was played on Centipede for the Atari 2600 system. Each competitor was given a set of shirts like this. The red shirts were worn by the competitors during the actual competition. The blue shirts were worn by the competitors’ guests as they watched the competition. I was wearing the red shirt from this set when I won an AWVGC Silver Medal.

Since September of 1983, these shirts have always been in my possession. I am selling them together to maintain their integrity as a set, which is how I received them. There were 35 competitors representing 24 countries at this contest. Click here to read an Atari Age magazine article about the AWVGC. This auction is occurring in conjunction with the 27th anniversary of this competition.

I don’t know whether or not the shirts that went home with the competitors from the other countries still exist as sets, or even if they exist at all. However, I do know that this is the only Competitor Shirt Set brought back to the United States, because I was the only American player in the 1983 AWVGC.

These shirts can also be seen near the end of Part 1 in my two part video that describes my video gaming history.
My Video Gaming History – Part 1
My Video Gaming History – Part 2

The video shows the top of the number sagging away from the back of the red shirt. I had this professionally repaired at a local shop that specializes in garment restoration. The photos show the successfully restored condition of the shirt.

The tags inside both shirts are partially faded. Other than that, the shirts are in excellent condition. The red shirt was worn about a half a dozen times. The blue shirt was worn even less.

The shirts were distributed randomly to the competitors, so the fact that I ended up with Shirt Number ‘1’ was just like a little bonus.

The winning bidder in this auction will also receive the following:

Certificate of Authenticity – This certificate is notarized, signed by me, and attests to the origin and history of this AWVGC Shirt Set. It is professionally designed and printed. The certificate is printed on 24 lb. parchment paper.

January 1984 Issue of ‘Video Games’ Magazine – This magazine has an article about the AVGWC on page 18, which contains the names (including mine), scores, and countries of all the medalists. This magazine is in good condition with no tears, no folds, and only a slight creasing that shows up on several pages.

Stuffed Centipede from Atari – Centipedes, like this one, were used to decorate the contest venue at the 1983 U.S. Atari Centipede Championship in San Francisco, CA. I used to have several of these, but this is my last one. I don’t know if any others still exist. This particular one survived the years by being attached to my itinerary folder for this national competition. The body of this Stuffed Centipede is dented in places, but it still has both eyes, both antennae, and the tag with the message from Atari. This Stuffed Centipede comes with its own matching, notarized Certificate of Authenticity, signed by me, which is also printed on 24 lb. parchment paper. This Stuffed Centipede will be shipped inside the protective case which is shown in the photos.

The Competitor Shirt Set, the ‘Video Games’ magazine, the Stuffed Centipede with case, and both Certificates of Authenticity will be shipped Free, Fully Insured, to the winning bidder via Fed Ex, once funds are deposited into Paypal and cleared. Shipping will occur as soon as possible after payment. International bidders are welcomed. This package can be shipped anywhere in the world that receives Fed Ex deliveries. Payment is expected within seven days of the auction closing.

Set your collection apart with this unique package of rare Atari goodness. Thanks for your interest in this auction.”
