The esports industry is growing, specifically in the Philippines with the 30th SEA Games being hosted by the Philippine Southeast Games Organizing Committee. The PHISGOC partnered with a gaming hardware company called Razer to make it happen.

Medals

With the addition of esports in the 2019 South East Asia Games, the games will have it’s first medals in the multi-sport event. This is a huge step in the direction of esports growing around the world. Moreover, the 2019 South East Asia Games will start on Nov 30th till Dec 11th 2019 across the Philippines, specifically Manila, Clark, Subic, Botangas, La Union and Tagaytay. There will be 6 gold medals for 3 gaming platforms which will be split between PC, console and mobile.

Speaking with Razor and PHISGOC

Razers Chief Strategu Officier Li Meng Lee gave his opinion on the SEAG Games 19 event,

“We are really just about the gaming. Our moto is for gamers by gamers. We put them right at the center. How we make esports recognizable at the global stage, and that’s exactly what we are announcing today that esports will be the first main sports in sea game.”

As well, Marquis Tan, who works in product marketing at Razor said:

“I think it legitimize part of the sea games, it kind of like gives more credibility to the esports scene as a whole. Now even more like a I guess traditional people can see that there’s value into this.

Ramon Tats Suzara who is part of the Philippine Southeast Games Organizing Committee said that, “Esports is good for the Filipinos. We have a million people who are doing gaming and then gaming. Again, this is again for me historic for sports in the Philippines. Esports will bring a different direction.”

Games included in the 30th SEA Games 2019

In the inaugural tournament at the 2019 SEA Games, the game titles will be:

  • Dota 2
  • Starcraft 2
  • Tekkan 7
  • Mobile Legends: Bang Bang
  • Arena Valor

The sixth title will be announced in a few weeks. PHISGOC Executive Director Ramon Suzara said: “We are thrilled to see the momentum that our partnership with Razer has achieved in such a short period of time. We are working with all involved publishers and partners to lock down the titles within the next few weeks, and look forward to watching the region’s best esports athletes face off in the arena next year.

Razer co-founder and CEO Min-Liang Tan said:

“In the three weeks since we announced esports as a medal event at SEA Games 2019, we’ve seen a phenomenal level of interest from all segments of the industry, most of all game publishers. The shortlisting of six games in such a short time is evidence that the notion of esports as a legitimate sporting event is no longer a fad. We look forward to having more partners come on board and join us in defining a new generation of sporting heroes for the youth and millennial’s.”

Diversity

The titles we’re picked by the organizers due to their diversity (not all being the same type of game). It makes sense these titles were picked as Dota 2 is a huge game worldwide. Starcraft 2 is one of the most popular games in the Asian gaming world. On top of this great news, both men and women will be able to participate; not all leaning to the all-male sign-ups in past SEA Games tournaments.

Perhaps we’ll see some incredible runs, such as the time when G2 Esports Becomes the First Team in History to go 12-0 on the Main Stage.
