The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has recently come out with a study that shows 65% of American adults enjoy playing video games. Here’s some other interesting findings.
What is the Entertainment Software Association?
The ESA is the trade association of the gaming industry in the US. It was founded in 1994 under the name IDSA (Interactive Digital Software Association) and later renamed to ESA in 2003. Most of the top gaming publishers are members of this trade association. Some of the companies include:

- Sony Interactive Entertainment
ESA is also responsible for organizing the annual ES expo in LA. ESA represents it’s members across the nation and globally. Its services include a global content protection program, business and consumer research as well as government relations. (source)

The Entertainment Software Association occasionally does press releases about certain topics in the gaming industry. This time ESA conducting a study which debunks common misconceptions associated with video game players. In their study, they found that 164 million adults in the US play video games, and three-quarters of all Americans have at least one gaming system in their home (source).
In addition to that, 93% of American households own a smartphone; half of which play video games on it. For the first time, the ESA took a closer look at individual Americans who play video games. The study revealed that Americans who play video games represent a “cross-section of the American population“; These individuals are:
- Engaged in their communities
- See games as a positive force in society
Additionally, three-quarters and more have reported that gaming provides them with mental stimulation and stress relief.
- Gamers who reported mental stimulation (79%)
- Gamers who reported relaxation and stress relief (78%)
Interestingly, the study showed that gamers are engaged in politics, where 59% report that they will vote in the next presidential election. More than half of the individuals in the study are college-educated. In terms of hobbies and interests outside of videos games, 56% reported that they also draw, sing, or write. The study also showed that woman account for 46% of gamers.

Parents and Gaming
In the study, it was interesting to note that gamers pursue a healthier lifestyle; averaging 7 hours of sleep, with 32% participating in meditation. When it came to parents, 90% of them pay attention to what their child is playing; with 57% of parents playing alongside their child on a weekly basis. There were 74% of the parents that believed video games can be educational. Parents were also aware of the ratings for the games their children play (84% are aware of ratings).
Other Interesting Points in the Study
There were several other interesting points to mention in the study.
- 65% of American adults play video games
- The average age of a gamer is 33 years old
- 75% of Americans have at least one gamer in their household
- Most common devices are smartphones (60%), PC (52%), dedicated game console (49%)
