The Overwatch World Cup at Blizzcon 2019

It all started with 10 teams from around the world competing at the Anaheim Convention Center Arena in the US. The format of the World Cup had teams split evenly into two round-robin style groups. The top country from each group would move onto the semifinals while the 2nd and 3rd placed countries would move into the quarters. In Group A the US, France and South Korea moved on while China, Denmark, and Netherlands moved on in Group B.

In the Quarter-Finals, South Korea beat Denmark 3-0 while France topped Netherlands 3-1 on the other side. The Semis proved to tell a story that was waiting to unfold. The US and China dominated their matches to move onto the finals and compete for a chance to be crowned the Overwatch World Cup Champions.

Team China VS Team USA

The Final was set to be a thriller, with Team USA playing against Team China. After the US beat South Korea 3-1, the tone was set for a US team that was poised to make history, while Team China was looking to make history themselves. Since 2016 when the Overwatch World Cup started, South Korea has won each and every year. But for the first time in three years, South Korea was going home without a gold medal.

On the first map, Team USA won a hard-fought battle on Ilios to go up 1-0 in the series. At this point, the entire arena was cheering loudly for Team USA.

The momentum carried on to Match 2 and 3, and SPACE put on an absolute clinic on Sigma to secure a full capture for his team on Dorado. In the end, Team USA was just to strong for Team China, beating them 3-0 and winning the Overwatch World Cup title for the first time in history. For a team that worked hard for months before, and took every practice as if it was a finals match were ended up carrying the trophy.

This is a victory that will be remembered for ages, and Team USA proved to the rest of the world that they can compete at the highest level and be World Champions.
