Top 10 Video Games of 2017
We’re slowly coming to the end of 2017. It has been a great year of gaming like usual. So many great games coming out, and a revival to make remakes including Call of Duty’s Modern Warfare Remastered. With that said, it’s time to put together the Top 10 Video Games of 2017.
The statistics come from Metacritic, a site that basically aggregates reviews of media products such as video games. Their ratings fluctuate, however, Metacritic is pretty stable with their rankings. Top 10’s are always subjective and just because the stats come from Metacritic doesn’t mean this is one true list of best video games of 2017.
But I can say it’s a good indicator of what games were the top of it’s class. So let’s just to the list and check out the The Top 10 Video Games of 2017!
#10. Lone Echo (PC)
To kick off the Top 10 Video Games of 2017 list, we got Lone Echo for the PC at #10. It has a Metacritic score of 93 and a user rating of 7.2. The game came out in July and is a virtual reality adventure game. You can however just play it as is on your computer without any VR goggles. But, the game was made to utilize the VR effect.
The game was published by Oculus Studios and this is just the beginning. There’s so much potential with the Oculus that after seeing how Lone Echo played, it will be exciting to see future games.
#9. Beyonetta (PC)
#9 on the Top 10 Video Games of 2017 list is Bayonetta on the PC. Bayonetta is an action-adventure hack and slash video game created originally by PlatinumGames and published by Sega. The game originally came out for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3. The PC version of the game was released on April 11th of this year and developed by Nex Entertainment. The game had numerous improvements graphic wise including resolutions up to 4K and support for 60 frames per second refresh rate.
This game has a user rating of 8.3 on Metacritic, putting it in the green. Many top tier gaming sites gave this game a perfect score such as Gaming Age and ReviewScope.
#8. Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove (Switch)
Shovel Knight Treasure Trove on the Switch came out this year on March 3rd. With it’s Mega Man / 2d / 8-bit make-up, the game became a hit with it’s awesome gameplay and memorable characters. The original game was a huge success that Brave Wave created a beautiful mastered Vinyl Soundtrack for the game (link).
This game has a user rating of 8.0 on Metacritic, putting it in the green. However, the Metascore is higher at 91. Many top tier gaming sites gave this game a perfect score such as Gaming Age, Vooks and Chepecarios. Those who loved the 8-bit generation will fall in love with this instant classic.
#7. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Switch)
How can a Top 10 Video Game List of 2017 be complete without having Mario Kart in it? That’s right, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is at #8 with a user rating of 8.5 putting it in the green, and a Metascore of 92. Nintendo was facing a bunch of issues last year and many thought that Nintendo was on it’s way in a downward spiral, probably going in the direction SEGA did when it stopped making console games.
Then Pokemon GO came out and Nintendo stock literally went up two fold. Now with the Switch coming out stocks went up even more and I’m sure Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has a little bit to do with it :). Not having a Nintendo console producing a Mario Kart is like Activision with no Call of Duty. They need those franchises to stay strong.
#6. Undertale (PS4)
Undertale takes the #6 spot with a solid 9.2 Metascore rating. However, the user rating is only 6.4 which is the lowest in the top 30. The game came out on August 15th so it hasn’t been out as long as the others on the list. From Wikipedia:
Undertale is a role-playing video game created by American indie developer and composer Toby Fox. In the game, players control a human child who has fallen into the Underground, a large, secluded region underneath the surface of the Earth, separated by a magic barrier. The player meets various monsters during a quest to return to the surface, mainly through the combat system; the player navigates through mini-bullet hell attacks by the opponent, and can opt to pacify or subdue monsters in order to spare them instead of murdering them. These choices affect the game, with the dialogue, characters, and story changing based on outcomes.
#5. What Remains of Edith Finch (XONE)
This is one game I haven’t played yet and I will be downloading it soon. So I’m happy to see it’s ranked high on the list. The game has a Metascore of 92 with a user rating of 7.1. and is number 5 on the Top 10 Video Games of 2017 list.
The Team behind Giant Sparrow put out another game by the name of The Unfinished Swan. Although it hasn’t reached the same levels of What Remains of Edith Finch, I’m glad to see indie game companies like them make a move to the top and get recognition. Hard work pays off and I hope they’ll put out more games in the near future.
Taken from Wiki:
What Remains of Edith Finch follows the titular character, a young woman revisiting her old family home as she recalls or discovers the stories of deceased family members. The game was met with very positive reception from critics, who praised its story and presentation. It received several nominations at The Game Awards 2017, winning Best Narrative.
#4. Persona 5 (PS4)
This is the 6th installment from the franchise. Persona comes a long way and ATLUS keeps it real with #5. It’s #4 on the list with a Metascore of 93 and a user rating of 9.1. The game was released in April. For those of you who don’t know, Persona is also known as Shin Megami Tensei.
Persona 5 is a role-playing game that takes place in Tokyo and the premise behind the game is interesting, as the main character is falsely accused of assault. So you can see where the Persona powers comes in during the events. I won’t go into detail as some of you hate even a little hint of spoilers, but this is a title that you should definitely hit up.
#3. Divinity: Original Sin II (PC)
Divinity Original Sin II is number 3 on the Top 10 Video Games of 2017 list. As you can see from the box of the game, some of the top game reviewers gave it 9/10 which says a lot. Created by Larian games, the Metascore is also high at 93 with a user score of 8.3. The game was released in September of this year which is only 3 months ago and already has surpassed games that been in the loop from the beginning of the year. That in itself is impressive.
Divinity Original Sin II is a role-playing game and a sequel to Divinity Original Sin. The game has received to many great reviews that it’s being considered as one of the best role playing games ever created which is saying a lot. I don’t think you can give that title to any game… well you can but there needs to be more than just reviews and another metric to add to this acclaim would need to be sales. But I’ll be looking to pick this one up for sure.
#2. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (WIIU)
I’m not surprised that “a” Legend of Zelda game made the top 10, or, that of a Nintendo game. With a Metascore of 96 and a user rating of 8.1, this makes Breath of the Wild a really solid game. Released back in March of this year, the game has been receiving positive reviews all over with some saying it’s one of the best Zelda games ever made.
I always find that’s a tough question to answer. What is the best Zelda game ever made? Well there’s a generational bias with my response, as with any response about this game. I think A Link to the Past was the greatest Zelda game ever created. But some think Ocarina of Time is, of Twilight Princess. It depends on the game you played in your childhood and what memories you have the most of. Some even say Majora’s Mask is the greatest lol. Nintendo continues to come out with solid games, thus, competing with Microsoft and Sony in the console wars.
You can’t beat Nintendo…
#1. Super Mario Odyssey (Switch)
Super Mario Odyssey… yup.. a Super Mario game hits the top spot on our Top 10 Video Games of 2017. Not surprising as most Mario games get top spot (well, with the exception to a few lol). Super Mario Odyssey was hugely anticipated with the release of the Switch and it didn’t disappointed. Bringing a whole new look to Super Mario’s surroundings in a city rather than a fantasy land (well, ok, it’s sort of a fantasy land as well lol).
Rating for the game is off the charts. It currently has a rank of 96 with a user rating of 9.0. It’s only 2nd with user rating behind Persona 5 by 0.1 point. I haven’t bought the Switch yet as I’m waiting for more games to come out, but it’s really a no brainer to get this one
