- Valorant was one of the most anticipated titles to come out in 2020, however, with recent data available, their performance against other FPS games does not look good.
Valorant was the most anticipated games of the year, and Riot Games invested a significant amount of time into it. The gaming giants were known with their MOBA game League of Legends. However, they wanted to take a swing at the FPS arena. Riot Games followed a very aggressive marketing strategy with the game. For 6 weeks there was a closed beta where players can get closed beta keys by watching the streams. This created a massive viewer count in Valorant streams. Valorant broke several Twitch records in the process. But according to analysts, Valorant is performing below expectations in Twitch after release.
Valorant Twitch Stats
If you take a look at Twitch viewership, Valorant is behind Modern Warfare in total hours watched between June 1st to June 7th. There are multiple games ahead such as GTA V and more. For a new game, these numbers are not great according to analysts. But we need to keep in mind that the game just released and it is very soon to say whether it was successful or not. Keep in mind that there are no esports tournaments for Valorant yet.
This is also a massive factor since esports brings viewers more than streamers. But there are some critics who point out that Apex Legends, a game that was released last year broke many records and was one of the biggest releases for an FPS game in recent time. With Valorant’s performance so far, especially with a major gaming company behind it, the numbers should have been better in the first week.
Additionally, there are a number of teams and players who switched to the new game especially from CS:GO. For example, an entire Korean CS; GO team moved to Valorant called Vision Strikers. Teams such as 100 Thieves announced their roster with ex CS:GO player Hiko at the captain seat. We are wondering if this influx of players was based upon the popularity of the game during the closed beta. Or are they really believing in Valorant?
Valorant has Riot Games at the helm we know that they have a good record with esports organizations. Time will tell whether Valorant will be successful or not and people need to remember that Fortnite Battle Royale wasn’t an instant hit when it first came out, and that it took a while for the game to gain traction.
